Yohomobile's eSIM review

Heading on adventures abroad is surely exciting, but there are many practicalities to consider. Among the most important tasks is figuring out how to stay connected throughout your travels.

But this is easier said than done. Roaming internationally can easily break your bank, while purchasing a local SIM can be time-consuming or sometimes even impossible. Thankfully, there is another option that's much more convenient. We're talking about eSIMs.

Unlike the old-style SIM cards, you can easily set up an eSIM (also called an embedded card or digital SIM) right on your device. There is no need to make a trip to the store or buy a physical SIM to connect to a network.

But if you decide to purchase an eSIM yourself, you'll quickly find out there are countless options to choose from. That's why we've started a series of reviews to help you make the decision.ย

This time, we're testing Yoho Mobile. Let's see how good it performs!

The benefits of an eSIM

With an eSIM, communicating even outside your home country becomes a breeze. All you have to do is choose the right eSIM plan for you, follow the installation steps, and connect to a local network.

For this and many other reasons, eSIMs have become a popular choice for travelers. Using them, you can be sure to have constant connectivity regardless of your location. Before you buy a plan for your adventures, make sure to check whether your phone is compatible with the technology (spoiler โ€“ย it most likely is).ย

Here are some of the perks of choosing an eSIM over a physical SIM, particularly while on the move:

  • Peace of mind: With an eSIM, there's no need to switch to a physical SIM when hopping across countries. Instead, you can remotely download a new eSIM and start using it instantly.

  • Flexibility: The eSIM empowers you to seamlessly switch between various data plans based on your location, giving you the freedom to pick what suits you best.

  • Budget-friendly: eSIM plans usually come at a more affordable price compared to those sky-high international roaming fees. Plus, you can say goodbye to unpleasant surprise charges.

  • Enhanced security: Since it operates virtually, there's no fretting over losing or having your eSIM stolen.

  • Keep your number: While adventuring with an eSIM, you can keep your phone number and use it abroad. This is a great way to sidestep the hassle of acquiring a new number while on the move.

Why we're testing Yoho Mobile

One of the trendy new eSIM providers in the current market is Yoho Mobile.

The company has more than 30 roaming agreements with partner carrier, which allows them to offer some of the best-priced plans. However, it seems the brand hasn't gained as much popularity as its competitors (especially among folks in the US), like Airalo, Nomad, or Holafly.

For this reason, we decided to test one of their plans and see whether it's as good as promised.

Purchasing the Yohomobile eSIM

Let's get into the purchasing process. To get my hands on Yoho Mobile's eSIM, I went to esims.io and used the search tool for buying and comparing different plans. I'm currently based in Riga, Latvia, so my goal was to find a local eSIM plan that would work here or a regional eSIM for Europe.

I didn't need a lot of data for my test, so I searched for the cheapest options available.

My pick was Yoho Mobile's 30-day plan 'Latvia eSIM.'

For $4, I got 1GB of data, which is good enough to do online browsing for 12 hours, send 1000 emails, and stream 1 hour of video.

$4/GB is not the best price you can get in Latvia, but if you decide to purchase a bigger plan, as with many eSIM providers, your price will go down. For reference, here is an overview of plans that Yohomobile offers for Latvia:

After making my choice, I was redirected to Yoho Mobile's website. At first glance, it's simple and without too much information that might leave you confused.ย

To purchase the eSIM, you must first make an account, so that's what I did. Once I filled out all the details, I had to choose the payment option.

It's possible to buy their eSIM using a credit card, Apple Pay or WeChat.ย

My setup experience

Once the purchase has been made, Yoho Mobile sends a QR code to your email, which can be used to speed up the setup process. It's also possible to install the eSIM manually, which is convenient in case you don't have a second device to display the QR code from, but it's not the best route to take, as it takes more time.

Personally, I prefer to use the QR code to install the eSIM. I simply scanned it with my iPhone, and then Apple took care of the rest. If you follow the instructions on the screen, you shouldn't encounter any issues. After the eSIM has been installed, remember to enable data roaming. Otherwise, you won't be able to use your eSIM.

This wasn't my first time using an eSIM, so I already knew what to expect from the setup process. Nevertheless, even if you don't have prior experience, you won't have any difficulty setting up your eSIM because the process is pretty straightforward. I love that you don't have to download an app (which is pretty standard amongst Yoho Mobile's competitors) to get your plan working.

This wasn't my first time using an eSIM, so I already knew what to expect from the setup process.

What was it like to use the eSIM

After setting up the eSIM, I noticed I could roam on the BITE network. In Latvia, there are three major telecom providersย  โ€“ LMT, TELE2, and BITE. Generally, BITE isn't considered the best option because its coverage isn't as good. However, since I'm based in the capital of Latvia (Riga), where the coverage is fine, I didn't have to deal with any problems.

My connection was stable and fast.

To see how well Yoho Mobile's eSIM works, I spent a couple of hours on my favorite apps, like Safari, Instagram, TikTok, and others. The speed was good โ€“ย I can't complain. However, compared to other plans, it was a bit slower (although still good).ย

yohomobile speed test_screenshot

I used a speed test to check the connection. According to its results, the latency was 168.5 ms, the download speed was 17.06 Mbps, and the upload speed was 5.67 Mbps.

Since Yohomobile's product is a roaming product (Yohomobile does not own the local network in Latvia), I also checked where my IP address was located to understand where my internet traffic was routed.

Yohomobile's customer service options

The quality of customer service plays an important role in any business. With eSIMs, errors can happen (especially if you're using them for the first time), so it's great to have someone to ask for help.ย

During my test, I had no reason to contact Yohomobile's customer service, which is a rather good thing :)

To get in touch with Yohomobile's team, you can send them an e-mail at support@yohomobile.com, call them through WhatsApp, or contact them through Facebook. Unfortunately, a live chat isn't available, so you'll have to wait a bit for a response.

Conclusion : my opinion about Yohomobile

To have a positive eSIM experience, there's really not that much you need โ€“ a good connection and a smooth purchase and installation process. Nevertheless, many eSIM providers still lack all of these components.

Using Yoho Mobile's eSIM was a breeze, and there's not much to complain about. Is it the fastest connection you'll experience? No. But is it enough to browse the internet and do whatever tasks you need? Sure.

If you with to discover more about Yohomobile plan's, you can do so on their website or on esims.io
